    Sorry hpandey wasn't intentional :),

My data is restricted to bay area. You are definitely looking at least at 600k for a decent home in bay area. This is taking into account the 20% correction as of today.

But i would still think the thumb rule (Total Interest ~ Total Principal) would hold in your example too:
    Loan Amount: 410K
    Total Interest: 383K

Good figure to make 600K loan .. that must mean people are buying at least a 650,000 house across the whole of US . You are talking about prices going down across economy you should take the average home value also across US which is definately not 600K or else most of people will never be able to buy a house.

I am taking about a home of an average 450K ( even that is more than the US average ) and at least 10 % down.

I don't think even anyone here would buy a 600K house in this economy to say the least !

Lets stick to real world calculations.

I agree with all the posters here. I also went ahead and bought the house while on H1B. Me and my family are really happy with our decision.

I got 100% loan (80-20) with no PMI. both 30yrs fixed. You can try with Mortgage agents who would do better deal initially and may transfer loan to big companies later. I got it at 5.7% first and 7% second last year.
Best of luck on your new Home(Lifestyle)!

After the bail-out bill failed in the House, Obama immediately posted a response reassuring Americans and investors that the leaders will come up with another soon.

Contrast this with McCains partisan blaming of Obama for failure of bailout, while it was him that pulled the stunt of rushing to Washington to 'rescue' the bailout. After failing to show the leadership of his own party -with majority of Repubs voting against the bailout (a clear indication of leadership failure and ineffectiveness of McCain Presidency in passing anything through his own party!), he found it convenient to Obama.

And it was Obama who proposed raising FDIC insurance to $250,000 to which McCain has (thankfully) chimed in.

Thanks for explaining the terms. You can go over 80% on the first loan but the lender will ask for PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance). Which is around 1% of the loan. To skirt around it, mortgage brokers break up the loan into first and second(80%+10%+10% down). This avoids the PMI and helps the buyer qualify for a bigger loan/house. Also PMI premiums are not tax-deductible.

Why on earth would an employer need me if I don't have merits?

I see your efforts to downgrade EB immigration and highlight FB immigration. This is just my observation, you don't have to agree or criticize it.

Is it fair to say that on one side you have the people who are trying to limit immigration.

On the other side you have people who want friendlier immigration policies. Within the friendlier immigration poliices; you have more self interest groups:

    h-1b group of self interest
    Liberia self interest groups
    lawful permanent resident spouse
    political asylum groups
    aged out groups
    universities with student visas
    unlawful interest groups
    h-2 groups
    nurses, etc.
    employment base groups.

All of these self interest groups go to media, senators, congressment etc., with their stories and why they think they should have their demands met. My personal opinion is that if a person can stay here and legally work and wait then they are not as disadvantaged as companies/people who are waiting to get in.

When you are going to do advocacy you need to know beyond your individual case and how you stack up across the board.

We are looking to buy a house and the bank is asking us to put down 10%. How much money is considered safe to have after down-payment if we are buying a home. I know it depends on the situation, but I would like some estimates/ball-park figures.

Banks are asking 5% down payment and 10% if the real estate market in that area is not currently stable.

If you are a first time buyer, you will have several other costs to foot such as

    Closing costs
    Moving costs
    Apt lease breakage (if applicable)
Initial basic furnishings at home that cannot wait

Plan for all this, and in general it s advisable to have some money squirreled away to pay bills during emergency situations such as layoffs. Since you have already decided to buy a home, the one thing I would tell you *not* to worry about for now is selling the home.

I agree, new H1b is not our concern..well not directly or immediately.
maybe the way to approach this is to ask that a PERM/LC once approved be considered as fulfilling the requirement for any certification needed for the job- in any case if it's the same process, it amounts to useless duplication to keep certifying a job again and again...

Duplication, triplication of work to file H1s. That is what anti-H1 guys want. They want to make the system so difficult that filing H1s renewals will be impossible. It is possible to talk to people who are ready to listen. These guys are in no mood to talk. That is why suggesting them anything will be like talking to a wall. IV should oppose this bill totally and completely. We should all educate everybody we know, as Administator said, we should inform our friends and employers to get their support.

    This is what I wrote:

Please try to use your own language, otherwise they will ignore the emails as form letters, but try to cover all the points. Later I think we should contact other News outlets and point out the incompetence

also send it to a competitor network and to a show which competes with Dobbs.

I haven't see any indication McCain is any better for EB immigration. He has no stated position on the issue. At least Obama has a public position which is pro-EB. After seeing McCain fail to get Repubs to vote for Bailout, I am not convinced he will be able to push anything controversial such as CIR through a Democratic Congress. At least if Obama is President, and with a Democratic filibuster-proof Senate, there may be a chance of a breakthrough.

Besides if McCain keeps spending trillions of borrowed dollars in Iraq for the next year, it doesn't matter if we get GC or not. We will be seeing a mother of all economic crises in a few more years.

So our only chance lies with Obama. I think we should all write to him about our issues once he becomes the President. If enough people write to him he may be more sympathetic to our cause.

It all depends on people's mind. You don't need to answer me, and I am sure you are pure by heart as my many muslim friends.

It depends where your bias is. Are you (you means in general people, not you particularly) biased to religion or you are biased to humanity! When a christian or hindu gets killed, if it doesn't pain you as much when a muslim gets killed, you are more biased towards religion.

People are biased towards religion often shelter under humanity sentences to prove their point. But quite ofter they become onesided. Like People were igniting fire crackers in Pakistan when Mumbai massacre happened. When one of them gets killed, they shout on name of humanity.

My sympathies are with poor innocent kids of palestine got killed.

But people should come out and unshelter terrorists who live in civilian facilities. Same as Dawood & Azhar Masood. People want to harbour them but them if other country takes military action to capture them and some civilians killed because they were in civilian area, it is bad to shout on name of humanity. BECAUSE IN THAT CASE THEY ARE REALLY NOT INNOCENT.

Since most comments in here are against buying a house, I'd like to show one positive/lucky experience.

I bought my house in 2003 while I was on Labor stage, RIR.
I bought the house for the benefit of my kids as well as investment. We needed a bigger house as my kids grew and all my kids' friends lived in their own houses.
I chose the house in the best school zone from the area.

Luckily my house price went up about 50% since I bought, even 5% from last year.
I live in one of those few cities in the nation where the price went up.
And we got our GC last year, august.
    Yes, Very lucky.

Well, sometimes, you just have to take a chance, and stop calculating and see what happens.

:D We've all been there, but don't like to admit it. We've all kicked

back in our cubicles and suddenly felt something brewing down below. As

much as we try to convince ourselves otherwise, the WORK POOP is

For those who hate pooping at work, following is the Survival Guide

for Taking a dump at work.

*CROP DUSTING* - When farting, you walk really fast around the

office so the smell is not in your area and everyone else gets a whiff, but no

one knows where it came from. Be careful when you do this. Do not stop

until the full fart has been expelled. Walk an extra 30 feet to make sure

the smell has left your pants.

*FLY BY* - The act of scouting out a bathroom before pooping. Walk

in and check for other poopers. If there are others in the bathroom,

leave and come back again. Be careful not to become a FREQUENT FLYER.

People may become suspicious if they catch you constantly going into the bathroom.

*ESCAPEE* - A fart that slips out while taking a pee or forcing a

poop in a stall. This is usually accompanied by a sudden wave of

embarrassment. If you release an escapee, do not acknowledge it.

Pretend it did not happen. If you are a man and are standing next to the farter in the urinal,

pretend you did not hear it. No one likes an escapee. It is uncomfortable for all involved.

Making a joke or laughing makes both parties feel uneasy.

*JAILBREAK*- When forcing a poop, several farts slip out at a machine

gun pace. This is usually a side effect of diarrhea or a hangover.

If this should happen, do not panic. Remain in the stall until everyone has

left the bathroom to spare everyone the awkwardness of what just occurred.

*COURTESY FLUSH* - The act of flushing the toilet the instant the

poop hits the water. This reduces the amount of air time the poop has to

stink up the bathroom. This can help you avoid being caught doing the

*WALK OF SHAME* - Walking from the stall-to the sink-to the door

after you have just stunk up the bathroom. This can be a very uncomfortable

moment if someone walks in and busts you. As with farts, it is best to

pretend that the smell does not exist.--Can be avoided with the use of

*OUT OF THE CLOSET POOPER* - A colleague who poops at work and is

Dog-gone proud of it. You will often see an Out-Of-The-Closet Pooper

enter the bathroom with a newspaper or magazine under their arm.

Always look around the office for the Out-Of- The-Closet Pooper before

    entering the bathroom.

*THE POOPING FRIENDS NETWORK (P.F.N)* A group of co-workers who band

together to ensure emergency pooping goes off without incident. This

group can help you to monitor the whereabouts of Out-Of-The-Closet

    Poopers and identify SAFE HAVENS.

*SAFE HAVENS* A seldom-used bathroom somewhere in t he building

where you can least expect visitors. Try floors that are predominantly of

the opposite sex. This will reduce the odds of a pooper of your sex

    entering the bathroom.

*TURD BURGLAR* - Someone who does not realize that you are in the

stall and tries to force the door open. This is one of the most shocking

and vulnerable moments that can occur when taking a poop at work. If

this occurs, remain in the stall until the Turd Burglar leaves. This way

you will avoid all uncomfortable eye contact.

*CAMO-COUGH* A phony cough that alerts all new entrants into the

bathroom that you are in a stall. This can be used to cover-up a

WATERMELON, or to alert potential *Turd Burglars* - Very effective when used in conjunction with a

*SHIRLEY TEMPLE* - A subtle toe-tapping that is used to alert

potential Turd Burglars that you are occupying a stall. This will remove all

doubt that the stall is occupied. If you hea r a SHIRLEY TEMPLE, leave the

bathroom immediately so the pooper can poop in peace.

*WATERMELON* - A poop that creates a loud splash when hitting the

toilet water. This is also an embarrassing incident. If you feel a

Watermelon coming on, create a diversion. See CAMO-COUGH.

*HAVANAOMELET* - A case of diarrhea that creates a series of loud

splashes in the toilet water--often accompanied by an Escapee. Try

    using a CAMO-COUGH with a SHIRLEY TEMPLE.

*AUNT BETTY* - A bathroom user who seems to linger around

forever...Could spend extended lengths of time in front of the

mirror or sitting on the pot.

An AUNT BETTY makes it difficult to relax while on the crapper, as

you should always wait to poop when the bathroom is empty. This benefits

you as well as the other bathroom attendees

    ************************************************** ******************

*The King Poop* - This kind is the kind of poop that killed Elvis.

It doesn't come until you're all sweaty, trembling and purple from

    straining so hard.

*Bali Belly Poop* - You poop so much you lose 5 lbs.

*Cement Block* - You wish you'd gotten a spinal block before you

*Cork Poop* - (Also Known as Floater Poop) = Even after the third

flush, it's still floating in there. How do I get rid of it? This poop

usually happens at someone else's house.

*The Bungee Poop* - The kind of poop that just hangs off your rear

before it falls into the water.

*The Crippler* - The kind of poop where you have to sit on the

toilet so long your legs go numb from the waist down.

*The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang* - The kind of poop that hits you when

you're trapped in your car in a traffic jam.

*The Party Pooper* - The giant poop you take at a party and, when

you flush the toilet, you watch in horror as the water starts to rise.

Our Nation as a Startup (http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2010/12/29/india-journal-our-nation-as-a-startup/) By Rajeev Mantri | IndiaRealTime

Doing business in India can be overwhelming for somebody accustomed to working in a more hospitable business environment. The World Banks Doing Business study ranks India 134th worldwide for ease of doing business, behind lesser-talked- about nations such as Tanzania and Ghana.

Besides the well-documented inadequacy of physical infrastructure, archaic corporate and taxation laws are yet to catch up with modern ways of structuring and operating new ventures. Yet India is able to register high rates of economic growth year after year.

U.S. President Barack Obamas contention that India has already arrived is magnanimous India is a startup with high potential but hasnt made it yet into the pantheon of world powers. Like a startup, India is chaotic and unpredictable.

Democracy adds another twist in the tale. As the last three months have shown, Indian politics can turn on a dime and the perception of political stability can give way very quickly. Indias business model is contrary to how other Asian economies have developed: India continues to be services-driven and domestically-oriented instead of being heavy on export-led manufacturing.

This approach shielded the economy during the financial crisis. With growth driven by high-quality entrepreneurs who have been able to deliver despite a suspicious and often obstructionist state, its no wonder that investors continue to be bullish on India and tend to overlook major political and geopolitical risks.

But high growth brings with it many quandaries. Though a happy problem to have, a growing enterprise faces its own management challenges. At the very least, the capacity of Indias executives and government to manage growth has been somewhat disappointing. India chose (some would argue that it stumbled upon) a bottom-up development model based upon entrepreneurship.

We are now reaching a stage in the economic cycle where we need to push the envelop further, not negate the strategy that has served us very well over the last two decades. India saw two bursts of significant reform, from 1991 to 1996 under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and again from 1998 to 2004 under Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee. Since 2004, there has been virtually no reform initiated by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government in areas such as labor law, where the current regime is constraining growth in manufacturing. This is impairing the quality of Indias economic growth and limiting job creation.

Recently, Steve Jobs said that his company, Apple, is the worlds largest startup. Its an interesting view given that Apples market capitalization, which is close to $300 billion, makes it one of the most valuable companies in the world. Apple also has zero debt and tens of billions of dollars in cash. From the brink of bankruptcy and irrelevance in 1998, Apples financial and competitive strength is now the envy of the technology industry.

When Mr. Jobs returned as Apples CEO, he had a straightforward mantra: To rebuild Apple as a pioneering innovator and rescue it from the morass of creating me-too products, as he put it. He felt that the company he founded had forgotten what it stood for. This was audacious for a company struggling to stay on its feet.

Indian administrators and policy-makers should also remember how high rates of economic growth have been achieved in the first place. Like a startup which has achieved a fit between product and market fit and is ready to scale up, India needs to continue providing its entrepreneurs with the space and environment to operate.

Apple lost its mojo because it abandoned the strategy that made it what it was. Curiously, that strategy itself was not rigid and inflexible but one of continuous innovation, where Apple would make its products irrelevant before its competitors could. A return to this thinking has ensured the companys rise through the 2000s. India, too, needs to return to policies that have transformed its economy from anemic to blistering growth.

In Hindu philosophy, The Upanishads talk of the concept of Atmanam Viddhi, which roughly translates as knowing oneself. It turns out that self-knowledge is also a sound business strategy to reach where you want to go, its first important to know how you got to where you are.

The government must realize what it is that has delivered high rates of economic growth. Negating the ideas and policies that are driving Indias economic development by delaying the next round of economic reforms could prove to be immensely damaging to Indias economic prospects. India needs a visionary leader to step up and push through some of the changes that most agree need to be implemented but few have the political courage to execute or else an opportunity may be lost again.

We suffer due to the unfairness of a system that hinges upon the place of your birth! We demand that there be no quotas based on "country of birth" and that we ask for equitable treatment.
Singling someone out due to his/her "national origin" should be something we backlogged EB2/3 I folks should understand more than others. And yet if someone from Pakistan gets a green card - we gang up on him and are outraged that someone from a terrorist country got it before us!!!! Does that mean we would be ok as long as he got it after us?

I apologize for singling out Talash. I just got frustrated with the fact that you can come from a small, war-mongering terrorist country and get your gc in a year's time, gloat over it, while our tax money of several years finds its way intothe coffers of the very same nation and we wait patiently for several years to see the green.
It was misdirected anger and I stand corrected for singling out some one like this but it doesn't make my point completely invalid either.

I got plenty of red dots after my mere mention of the stupidity of ganging up on the fella... red dots are ok... it was the messages that came along with that were offensive - traitor , paki pork, etc - I just deleted my posts after that and stopped commenting on that particular thread.

I never hurled insults at others and never intended to - you should see the offline messages people left me and you will be equally surprised educated people can use such a horrible language! I'm quite sure several others didn't do that as well. Most folks have been logical and consistent in their posts.
I gave reds because I got reds - I didn't insult anyone at all. And I'm sure there are many others like me, who didn't participate in this dirty name calling but posted their views openly.

There is nothing wrong with discussing the history of India and Pakistan, nothing woring in discussing organized vs. unorganized religion, nothing wrong with pointing out the the flaws in Islam or any other religion - The problem is that such discussions always end up with insults hurled at each other. While we may start with the noble intention of having a civil discussion about these issues - every thread like this ends up with offensive remarks that drives people away. The simple question then becomes - is it worth it? Is this the place to do it? Would such a thread be allowed to continue on Ron Gotcher's website? I hope the moderators of this site realize that inaction on their part seems like they condone this type of behavior.

Why are you "singling" out this particular thread?

Haven't you seen enough bickering, shouting, name calling on other threads, which are supposedly, solely focused on addressing immigration issues.
How many threads have you seen not ending up in flaming at each others? Nearly, in every thread that is related to immigration, people jump at each others throats. Otherwise, there are threads which post useless visa bulletin predictions (I've done it myself).
And what have you done to stop it, may I ask?:(

All the red dots coming my way are more than welcome... just a small request about the insults .... please be brave enough to post them publicy!
So let us now go back to solving all the controversial theological, anthropological and geopolitical issues. Let us continue to demand for fairness and an immigration system blind to our country of birth - but make sure we point out other people's national origin... no wonder the most anti-immigration people are generally the most recent immigrants.

Why are be debating 3 - 4 years rent vs own? As the subject indicates "long" term prospects of buying a home..we of all the ppl should know the meaning of the word "long" based on our "long" wait for PD (which I think should be renamed to retrogress date because I see nothing priority about it)..the point being lets debate 10 years rent vs own..as against 3-4...I think over a 10 year timeline the buyers would come out ahead of the renters..maybe not in CA but in other states that's quite likely..

I agree that over 10 years buyers "may" come ahead of renters but our question is will buyers of : 2009 come out ahead of 2010 buyers or 2011 buyers? Also is it worth taking a risk and wait 1-2 years given the state of economy and our GC in limbo.

I have been paying rent since 2001 and my friends bought houses in 2004 & 2007. None at the moment think they are ahead of me due to their decision :) :p

    Hi pitha,

Thanks for posting this info. Could you please share the source of this information?

None of us should take this bill lightly. There is a saying - "one should never watch sausage or law being made". The guys who vote on the bills, in most instances, don't actually know what they are voting on. Most lawmakers may vote in favor of this bill as the anti-lobby is warpping this bill around a message "this bill is to enhance protections for American workers, so are you going to vote against American workers?" As such most lawmakers could vote in favor of this bill. The current environment is very dangerous where most people watch news in the sound-bites and half of the Senate is running for President. In such an environment, if you ask Obama, Hilary, Dodd, McCain etc., they are all likely to vote in favor of this bill, without going into the nuances and actual implications of this bill. None of these guys would want to be headlines saying something like Obama is against American Works. No one will actually care to look at the long term implication of such a bill whereby most of the IT jobs will be outsourced.

From tomorrow, we should all email and inform everybody that we can, including our employers. What is the direction from IV core? We are all waiting for the matching orders.

There was some discussion about H1B Program in CNN's Lou Dobbs program today and not surprised, as usual it was all against H1B... He had people form Programmers Guild speak and they mentioned about this Durbin-Grassley Bill and he also mentioned that in the house a similar Bill will be introduced by Congressman Bill Pascrell.
Looks like, the Anit-Immigration / Anti- H1B/L1 are executing an already well planned strategy. We need to do something on this else as someone wrote in some forum; this will be a slow-bleed and will eventually kill the h1b program. Now or never, we need to join hands and have to do what is possible to assist the core and ourselves.
